Some properties are just buildings. Others are a story about a whole neighborhood starting a new chapter. Foote Park at South City is one of those stories, and I was proud to photograph the property for Memphis Housing Authority.
I have been doing commercial photography for more than 35 years, and my images have been included in national ad campaigns for brands like Radisson, Hilton, Choice Hotels and Love's. Multifamily work like this draws on everything I have learned. Each frame has to be honest about the place, and it also has to make people feel something when they see it.
About Foote Park at South City
Foote Park at South City is a major mixed-income residential redevelopment on the former Foote Homes public housing site, just south of Downtown Memphis along South Danny Thomas Boulevard. Foote Homes was one of the city's historic public housing developments. It was demolished and replaced with modern apartments, townhomes and senior housing, designed as a mixed-income neighborhood.
The numbers show the scale. The project includes 712 residential units built over 6 phases, with an investment of about $187 million. The partners are Memphis Housing Authority, the City of Memphis, McCormack Baron Salazar and Community Capital. The mix includes 393 replacement assisted units, 126 mid-range affordable units and 193 market-rate units, and 120 senior apartments are part of that total. Memphis Housing Authority and the City celebrated the completion of the redevelopment on October 9, 2025.
Color and Line on the Outside
The Phase VI building at 430 S. Danny Thomas Boulevard is a four-story building in bold blue and gray, and it was the final phase of the project. A facade like that deserves a big sky. I worked the angle so the deep blue panels and the bright white window frames stand out against the clouds, with the landscaping and the curb leading your eye into the frame.
The townhome streets tell a different part of the story. Front porches, young trees with a touch of fall color, and wide, clean streets say neighborhood, not project. I shot low from the corner so the crosswalk lines pull you down the street, the way you would see it walking home.
Interiors That Feel Like Home
Inside, the goal is to help someone picture their own life in the space. A wide angle from the corner shows how the living room, dining area and kitchen connect, so the open plan reads in a single frame.
Color matters here too. The patchwork dresser, the green rug and the warm wood floors give these rooms personality, and I kept the white balance clean so those colors stay true.
In the kitchen, the under-cabinet lights and white tile do a lot of the work. I balanced that warm glow with the room light so the oak cabinets look rich without going orange.
The bedroom frame shows the bed, the nightstand and the open closet together, so a viewer understands the size and storage at a glance. The community also lists amenities such as a pool, fitness center, clubhouse, business center, pet-friendly living and on-site maintenance.
Virtual Staging: From Empty to Move-In Ready
An empty apartment is hard to picture yourself living in. Bare walls and open floor can make a room feel smaller and colder than it really is. Virtual staging fixes that without moving a single piece of furniture.
Here is the same room after virtual staging. A sofa, a rug, artwork and a dining table show how the space works for real life, and the kitchen, floors and windows stay exactly as they are. It gives renters a sense of scale and style, and it lets a property show finished, furnished rooms before anyone moves in.
Why Great Photography Matters for a Project Like This
A redevelopment of this size is years of planning, building and partnership. Photos are how most people will first meet it. Strong images help a property owner, a housing authority or a developer show the public what was built and why it matters. For me, that is where commercial work becomes art: finding the light, the line and the color that tell the truth about a place at its best.
If you have an apartment community, a development or a commercial property that deserves to be seen this way, let's talk.
